Your Cat's Coat as a Health Report Card

What a Healthy Cat Coat Looks Like

A healthy coat lies flat and smooth (appropriate for the breed), has natural sheen without being greasy or dull, sheds moderately and seasonally, has no bald patches or areas of excessive thinning, and has pale pink, supple, flake-free skin beneath. Knowing what healthy looks like makes changes much easier to identify.

Changes That Warrant Attention

Dull, dry, or brittle coat: often the first visible sign of nutritional deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, kidney disease, or simple dehydration. Excessive shedding outside normal seasons: stress, hormonal changes, parasites, and illness all trigger abnormal shedding. Greasy or oily texture: common in overweight cats who can't reach their hindquarters, and with certain skin conditions. Dandruff or flaking: can signal dry skin, allergies, ringworm, or Cheyletiella mites. Bald patches: over-grooming due to stress, food allergies, ringworm, or hormonal issues.

What We Do With What We See

Our groomers are trained to notice and document coat and skin changes. If something concerns us, we bring it to your attention — with specifics, not alarm. We're not veterinarians and don't diagnose. But we are an early detection system, and many of our clients have caught health conditions early because a groomer noticed and spoke up.

✦ Regular grooming sees what routine vet visits miss

Your vet sees your cat once or twice a year. We may see them every 8–12 weeks. That frequency, combined with trained eyes on every inch of coat and skin, makes a real difference in long-term health outcomes.
