The Mentor Role at Bark & Purr

As a Bark & Purr Mentor, you are the most influential person in this apprentice's career. You are not just teaching grooming — you are shaping the way another human being sees, handles, and cares for living animals.

  • Safety Leaders — the pet's wellbeing is the first priority, always
  • Culture Carriers — you embody Tranquil Tail Grooming® in everything you do
  • Confidence Builders — you create psychological safety for the apprentice to learn
  • Mentors do NOT rush, shame, or train through fear — of any kind
Mentor Expectations
  • Demonstrate best practices consistently — the apprentice is always watching
  • Correct privately, praise publicly — non-negotiable at Bark & Purr
  • Stop a groom the moment safety or pet stress is compromised
  • Teach the WHY, not just the HOW — apprentices need to understand, not just perform
  • Advocate for the pet above production speed, every single time
  • Document all weekly rubrics, tests, and sign-offs promptly
  • Report any concerns to the Managing Partner within 24 hours
How to Coach Effectively

The most powerful coaching questions are open-ended and forward-looking:

  • "What did you notice about this pet's body language during the groom?"
  • "What would you do differently next time? Why?"
  • "What went well today — and what are you most proud of?"
  • "If the pet could tell us something right now, what do you think it would say?"
Model calm before you expect calm. If you are rushed, stressed, or impatient, your apprentice will absorb it — and so will the pet. Your energy sets the tone for every training session.
How Mentors Use the Assigned Videos

Every week the apprentice has assigned videos to watch on their own time. Your role is to connect that video learning to live pets. Before every hands-on session, ask what they took away, what risks they identified, and how they're planning to keep the pet calm.

Videos are not entertainment — they are pre-work. If an apprentice hasn't watched their assigned videos, the hands-on session should not begin.

⚠ RED FLAG — STOP TRAINING IMMEDIATELY IF YOU OBSERVE THIS: if an apprentice rushes past a stressed pet signal, grabs tools out of frustration, or attempts a skill before they've been cleared — stop the session immediately. Return them to observation or prep-only mode. Do not document it as a discipline matter; reframe it as a safety reset.

Weekly Written Tests

Administer verbally or in writing at the end of each phase. Minimum passing score: 80%. Score and sign in the Mentor Log. Each phase has its own 10-question test built from that phase's content (FAS scale, sanitation, blade safety, ethics, etc.) — see the Apprentice Program page for the phase learning goals each test is built against.

⚠ CORRECTION (ADR-404a) — Weeks 10–12 test, current versions of Questions 8 and 9 teach answers that are no longer accurate and must not be used as written:
  • Q8 (commission on graduation): the old answer key ("35% commission + 100% tips") is wrong. [CONFIRM: per current tip-pool doctrine, not 35%+100% tips] — do not teach a commission percentage or a "100% tips" claim until Linda confirms current doctrine.
  • Q9 (commitment/repayment terms): do not teach either the 2-year/$5,000 or 3-year/$4,000–5,000 answer. This is the same clause flagged on the Apprentice Program page — [COMMITMENT CLAUSE PENDING ATTORNEY REVIEW — DO NOT SIGN OR TEACH ANY VERSION UNTIL LINDA'S ATTORNEY RESOLVES THE FINAL LANGUAGE — D102].
