About This Program

Bark and Purr Pet Grooming & Boarding has cared for Allen's dogs and cats for over 20 years. We are a certified Fear-Free grooming salon, and our Tranquil Tail Grooming® method creates individualized, low-stress experiences for every pet. Our training is led by a National Certified Master Groomer (NCMG) — the highest grooming credential in the United States.

The Grooming Apprentice Program is not a classroom bolted onto a job — the job is the classroom. You enter at Bather level and, over twelve mentored weeks across five phases, graduate as a Junior Groomer. You will bathe, prep, and hand off every dog to a standard, and you'll be taught tools, blades, breed patterns, coat science, Fear-Free handling, and the ethics of the work — with a mentor who tests you at every phase.

[COMMITMENT CLAUSE PENDING ATTORNEY REVIEW — two versions exist (2yr/$5,000 prorated vs 3yr/full-then-prorated); DO NOT SIGN any version of this program agreement until Linda's attorney resolves the final language — D102]
Program Structure — 5 Phases

Twelve weeks, five phases, one assigned mentor. Your mentor runs a weekly log, gives you a rubric score and a written test at each phase, and reports to the Owner within 24 hours on anything serious. Coaching doctrine here is "correct privately, praise publicly" — and your mentor is expected to teach you the why, not just the what.

Weeks 1–2 · Foundation & Observation
Learning the Bark & Purr way before you ever touch a tool
  • Understand and articulate the Tranquil Tail Grooming® philosophy and the Zen Den environment
  • Recognize the FAS (Fear/Anxiety/Stress) scale — 5 levels, and when to slow down or intervene
  • Observe a minimum of 5 complete grooms start to finish
  • Complete salon safety orientation and emergency protocols

Tested on: FAS recognition and when to intervene.

Weeks 3–4 · Bathing & Prep Mastery
The foundation of every great groom — prep determines 90% of the result
  • Select the correct shampoo/conditioner by coat type and skin condition
  • Master force-dry and kennel-dry technique by coat type
  • Nail trims and grinding, ear cleaning, sanitary prep — all with supervision
  • Consistently complete 6–8 baths in a 4-hour shift to standard before advancing to paid training

Tested on: bathing standards, handoff quality. Your mentor will also ask to see your Compass taps for the last dog, and whether you can bathe a dog booked for a #7 blade — and why not (pre-shave gate).

Weeks 5–6 · Tool Introduction & Safety
Clippers, blades, scissors — your professional tools require respect and precision
  • Learn the blade chart and correct sequence: #40 → #10 → #7F → #5F → #4F → #3F
  • Check blade temperature correctly before and during use — always test on your wrist
  • Perform safe sanitary trims (#10 blade) and paw pad shaving
  • Fear-Free tool introduction — clippers off first, vibration desensitization

Tested on: blade sequence and tool safety.

Weeks 7–9 · Groom Structure & Partial Grooms
Learning to see — and create — balance, shape, and flow
  • AKC breed groups and the 5 major coat types, and their grooming implications
  • The complete groom order of service, start to PAWgress Report
  • Complete feet, face, and fanny trims with confidence; partial grooms on small breeds, mentor side-by-side
  • The ethics and limits of the trade — humane shave-downs, double-coated breeds, when the answer is no

Tested on: ethical judgment. You'll also be asked what you tap when a dog reaches you still damp — and why documenting it is fair rather than tattling.

Weeks 10–12 · Junior Groomer Transition
Full grooms, finished results, and the professional handoff
  • Complete full grooms independently on all Level 3–approved breeds
  • Deliver a professional PAWgress Report to every PAWrent, every time
  • Know when to stop or modify a groom — and communicate it professionally
  • Demonstrate readiness against every item on the Graduation Checklist below

Tested on: commission structure and commitment terms — [CONFIRM: per current tip-pool doctrine, not 35% commission — see commitment clause callout above; mentors should not teach either answer until Linda resolves it]

The Board — This Is Part of the Job, Not Paperwork About It

This is the biggest thing older program materials didn't tell apprentices, and it's how the shop actually runs.

  • Tap your stages in real time: Start Bath the moment the dog is in the tub → Bath Done → Start Dry → Dry Done. Then add your bather note — what happened in the bath, plus any handling or dematting flags.
  • If you skip a tap and the groomer proceeds, the system records a protocol exception attributed to you. The dog never waits; the record never forgets.
  • The pre-shave gate: if the booked blade is above a #5, you may not bathe that dog until pre-shave is marked done. Stop and flag the front desk.
  • The handoff standard: hand off fully dried, brushed, un-matted. A ding on receipt — not fully dried / not brushed / still matted — is documented against that exact dog and feeds your handoff-clean rate, a number that follows you, including into how tips are shared.
  • Write your notes for the next person — your note becomes part of that pet's history, shown at their next 2–3 visits.
How You Are Scored — The Honest Version
Your record builds from day one. Your scores do not count for the first 30 days. Taps and cards build your record immediately, but the auto-score is data-only for your first 30 days — nothing touches pay, tips, or reviews in that window (ADR-141). Auto-score weights are protocol 40 · handoff quality 25 · documentation 20 · timing 15. Your advancement through the program is decided by your mentor's rubrics and weekly tests — never by the auto-score. You can see your own numbers live on My Page, any time.
What an Apprentice Does NOT Do
  • Does not groom unsupervised until the mentor signs off for that skill level
  • Does not decide to stop a groom — the groomer on the table decides, and needs no manager's approval to do it
  • Does not quote prices or make promises to clients
  • Does not use a blade or tool they haven't been signed off on
Breed Approval & Skill Level System

Advancement through each level is earned, not automatic. Your mentor must sign off on each level before you attempt the next. This protects the pet, you, and the Bark & Purr brand.

LevelAllowed Breeds / SkillsSupervision RequiredRestrictions

(after Bathing Mastery)
Sanitary trims only, paw pad shaving, face tidies on calm pets, nail trimsSupervised at all timesNo full grooms

Level 4 — Junior Groomer

Bark & Purr rule: breed cuts serve the pet — the pet does not serve the breed cut. Comfort, coat health, and emotional safety always come before style or speed. If a pet is too stressed, the groom stops. This is never a failure — it is professionalism.
